A Summer of Baby Foxes and Kittens on the Eastern Steppe

Journey into the eastern Mongolian steppe on an exclusive expedition led by award-winning wildlife photographer David Gibbon. Running from 17-25 June 2027, this tour is built around two of the most elusive animals on the steppe: Corsac fox cubs and Pallas’s cat kittens, photographed as they emerge from their dens in summer.

Both species are notoriously shy, which is why our local team positions blinds at active dens before you arrive. It means you can photograph the playful Corsac fox cubs and the famously grumpy Pallas’s cat – also known as the manul, and once called the world’s grumpiest cat by David Attenborough – without disturbing the animals or their parents. We shoot during the early mornings and late afternoons, taking full advantage of the superb light that washes over the vast Mongolian steppe.

Beyond the dens, guests can add an excursion to Hustai National Park to photograph Przewalski’s horse, the only truly wild horse left in the world, in its natural environment.

The wildlife is balanced with an authentic cultural journey. You begin and end in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, with two nights of five-star comfort at the Kempinski Hotel Khan Palace. Out on the steppe you sleep in traditional gers, minutes from the dens, living much as Mongolian herders have for centuries.
