Your New Frontier Journey to Photograph Baffin’s Polar Bears and Other Wildlife

Join award-winning wildlife photographer and Arctic explorer David Gibbon – founder of Wild Lens Nature Tours Ltd. – and a highly experienced polar guide for the ultimate high-Arctic adventure on Baffin Island.

While most Baffin tours are crowded or stick to well-known areas, this expedition takes you to a brand new, remote location – well away from hunters and competing tourism. After a privately chartered flight on a ski-equipped aircraft, you will live and photograph directly on the sea ice, offering an unparalleled experience: coming face-to-face with Polar Bears on their level.

The main goal of this tour is to help you capture amazing images of Polar Bears in their true high-Arctic winter environment. We have timed this expedition to coincide with the most crucial window: when Polar Bear mothers are emerging with their newly born cubs. Because our location is well away from hunting pressure, the wildlife is notably more relaxed, which is fantastic news for photographers.

Nothing compares to actually living on the sea ice and photographing these magnificent animals in their world – though if a fully off-grid basecamp isn’t for you, our Churchill expedition offers an eye-level Polar Bear photography experience from a town base in Manitoba. Here, on Baffin, you will travel across a vast wilderness of icebergs and snow, witnessing truly wild Polar Bears as they search for food.

And beyond the main target, this area of Baffin boasts a high density of Arctic Fox, which often approach the camp, along with chances to see Arctic Hare, Walrus, Caribou, Whales and Baffin Wolves.

Your Accommodation

Your adventure begins and ends with one night’s hotel stay and meals in Iqaluit. The core of the expedition is spent at our exclusive sea-ice basecamp. We have invested in new, state-of-the-art, heated domes (manufactured in the UK). You are guaranteed your own exclusive, well-insulated dome for the duration of the tour (no sharing required). Most excitingly, the unique design allows you to watch the Northern Lights dancing in the sky from the comfort of your bed. Basecamp amenities include charging facilities for all camera batteries. The toilet facility is rustic but private, consisting of a tented area with a seat over a dug hole. You will enjoy delicious home-cooked meals on this tour, avoiding the typical “boil-in-the-bag” expedition food. Most diets can be catered for, with typical hearty dishes including Beef Steak Stew, Canadian Chili, locally caught Arctic Char and Chicken Casserole.

David is the founder and director of Wild Lens Nature Tours Ltd., which specialises in Arctic photography tours. He has experience guiding expeditions in challenging environments, having ventured to Ellesmere Island twice – the closest land mass to the North Pole – living in temperatures below -50 degrees to photograph iconic Arctic wildlife. An acclaimed photographer, he has been awarded twice in the prestigious Nature Photographer of the Year and in Travel Photographer of the Year.

To secure your place on any of our expeditions, please get in touch via our Book Tour page or email us directly. We require a 25% non-refundable deposit to secure your booking. The remaining balance is due 90 days before the tour departure date.

Yes, completely. In strict accordance with UK travel law, all client payments are securely held in a dedicated trust account. Furthermore, all bookings are protected by supplier failure insurance. Should any of our partners be unable to fulfil their obligations due to unforeseen circumstances, you will be reimbursed for all prepaid services.

Wildlife photography often requires operating in unpredictable environments. If severe weather or transport disruptions alter our itinerary, our guides are highly experienced at adapting logistics on the fly to ensure your safety and maximise your photographic opportunities. We always recommend reviewing our booking terms for specific policy details regarding major weather events.

Not at all. Our expeditions are designed for beginner and professional photographers alike, as well as adventurous non-photographers. You will have access to highly tailored, one-to-one tuition in the field regardless of your current skill level.

No, travel insurance is not included. Due to the remote nature of our destinations, it is a mandatory condition of booking that you take out a comprehensive travel insurance policy before departing with us.
